THE IMPORTANCE OF IMAGES IN LEARNING

One of the exercises that I am doing with my students has to do with the relation that they can establish betweem images or pictures and text. This, in order too test their listening skills. As the activity that is suggested this time looks up to help students remember dialogues through the actions that happen in an animated sitcom, it is vital to define the role of images in learning EFL. According to Arnold, Puchta and Rinvolucri (2007) "images are in no way limited only to the visual, but also include the auditory" (p.8). This means that to have a meaningful learning process the pupils need to be involved in activities that connect both the sight and their earing. Therefore, in the organization of images supported by little texts they are going to remember what they listened and saw on the episode.
What was stated before is complemented by Chapelle (2003) who claims that "illustrations seem to provide one good method of providing access to meaning" (p.47). So, for this blog proposal, the students are going to use their inferring skill to interpret and connect the scenes of the episode and try to figure out what is happening. This, of course, using as a basis some vital vocabulary that will be the key to understand the main idea of the chapter and what the characters are going through.

Having highlighted the role of images in EFL learning, it is important to apply this in the classroom. Thus, I have created an small listening activity based on an episode of Gravity falls (2nd season, episode 9; Blendin's game) for you aas teacher to apply what was just explained theoretically.
First, tell your studeents to watch the episode.

Afterwards, tell them to get in groups of three people and ask them to organize together the different scenes and put below them, the corresponding text.

Finally, watch with your pupils, the episode again and tell them to tell you whn to stop for them to know when the scene was so that, they know if they did it right or not.

LET'S CHECK OTHERS' STYLE

These slides have been created for you to teach your students describe and get familiar with clothes vocabulary and the use of the verb has. Tell your students to listen to the recording of each image and focus ther attention on the chothes that are being said. Stop each image and tell the students to repeat after you so that you can correct their pronunciation if necessary.

Comments

  1. We are bombarded with images, students are constantly exposed to them and they love them. Then, we don't use them in our classrooms? As you mentioned, images allow to create relationships and to The importance of images in the EFL classroom for creating relationships between text and pictures, but they also improve learning, understanding, and abstract thinking. Besides, when the images are related to the students' daily lives, as you use them in sitcoms, they become meaningful tools in your class. I am using visual arts in my project, and I am amazed by the power of images in students learning processes. In my class, students create their own images and based on them they share, talk, and think about their contexts, families, neighborhoods, etc. I have found that images are an extraordinary tool to enhance students oral ability, they support their utterances on the images and everything becomes easier. Birdsell Brian (2017), asserts that images support the learning process in several ways, they are able to direct attention to the topic and motivate students by "making the language more accessible and stimulating". I would like to know more about the positive effects of images in your class, have you find improvement on critical/ creative thinking by using images? What have been your students' response to the use of images so far?
By the way, thanks for providing us with all your ideas and activities. They are so useful.
