 SITUATED LEARNING

Currently, the learning proceess perception has been changing. We as teachers, and the learners have gone through so many approaches which are focused either on the teachers and sometimes on the students. In this part of the blog we are going to define the concept of situated as it is the basis to succeed in enhancing the listening skills of third graders in a Colombia context. With that being said, it is vital to have a clear concept of what situated learning is. According to Cheok & Pan (2008) it is "an approach that puts learners into an envirorment that is similar to where the educational content will be applied in the future" (p.51). Thus, what needs to be done with the learners is to prepare them previously for the topic that will be taught to them, this includes vocabulary for them to understand a topic.

Therefore, If we want to teach a students values through a sitcoms as it will be done, the students should not only know the cartoon that will be shown to them, but they also should like it. In this case, the pupils were asked previously about their likes on animated sitcoms so that the learners feel attached to their learning process implicitly. This is posed by Thomas (2008) who  states that "situted learning is the game itself, which is a way of being in the world" (p.48). What is being suggested is that if we want to achieve implicit learning the best way to do it is by creating games that motivate the kids to learn and have fun while they do it. Then, situated learning is a proposal that let kids be free and see in learning EFL a different path for them to leave the classroom for a short period of time and travel to wonderland. After this brief introduction, let's take a look at some material that can help us make our class situated:

LISTENING TO LEARN

Tell your students that they are going to watch an episode from the fairly oddparents named the emotion commotion.

LET'S RECONSTRUCT THE STORY

After the episode has been played, tell the students to organize the following sequence of images in the order that they occured in the episode

  1. It seems like a very interesting activity for the students. Thank you a lot for uploading this valuable material, not only is it useful, but it also takes into consideration other aspects of situated learning you didn't mention. For example, according to the Northern Illinois University (2008?), the fact that students can participate more actively in their learning experience, the idea of creating meaning through meaningful activities and the problem solving issue (though in this activity it was not very remarkable). Yet, I still wonder how to carry out the other aspects of situated learning, such as: the importance given to social instruction, the development of cooperative activities and the fostering of social interaction, especially in other context in which classes are huge.

  2. Hi! I've never though how to use a tv show to solve some activities in the classroom! It is an interesting proposal because the teacher must use the tools to teach a topic and if he or she doesn't know how to do it, they have to be creative. In fact, the teacher is not the person who is talking in from of its students all the time, the teacher should try new alternatives to be near its students and develop their cognitive process with this ways of teaching.
